Based in New Jersey, Seton Hall University offers an online Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree program with two Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (A.G.N.P.) tracks: Acute Care and Primary Care. Both tracks are open to registered nurses (RNs) who possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited program. Seton Hall’s online A.G.N.P. program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Graduates are eligible to sit for national certification exams administered by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), or the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).

Seton Hall University Online AGNP Programs – Program Details

Both the Acute and Primacy Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner M.S.N. tracks at Seton Hall require 48 credits and 600 clinical hours to graduate. The online A.G.N.P. program is offered part-time, and can be completed in three to four years of study. Coursework is delivered through asynchronous instruction, meaning students can access lectures and course materials at any time. Along with an on campus orientation event that can be attended virtually, students can expect to interact with instructors and classmates via online discussion boards, phone, and Skype. A.G.N.P. students are also required to visit the Seton Hall campus twice over the course of the entire program for immersion experiences. The first on-campus immersion takes place two years into the program, and focuses on skills-based training. The second includes a series of guest lectures from experts in the field of adult gerontological nursing.

The core curriculum in either program track is similar, with students taking many of the same courses but completing different, role-specific practicums. For students following a three-year plan, the first year will consist of six courses: Theoretical Basis of Nursing, Advanced Clinical Pathophysiology, Clinical Pharmacology, Nursing Research I, Health Promotion, and Forces in Health Care. In the second year, students take courses in Advanced Health Assessment/Clinical Decision Making and Health Concepts in Aging, as well as begin clinical practicums in their chosen specialty. The final year includes two additional practicums, and advanced coursework specific to the A.G.N.P. track being pursued.

Seton Hall University Online AGNP Programs – Admission Requirements

In order to be considered for admission, applicants to Seton Hall’s online M.S.N., A.G.N.P. program must possess both current RN licensure in the state where they intend to complete their clinical hours, and a BSN from an accredited nursing program. Students are also required to have professional liability insurance. Admission to the program requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0, with a “B” average in all nursing courses. Prior to starting any graduate nursing courses at Seton Hall, students must complete undergraduate coursework in the following areas: statistics, nursing research, and physical assessment. A basic physical assessment refresher course must be completed within three years of enrolling in the first practicum. The school also recommends at least one year of nursing experience before beginning clinical practicums.

Along with a completed application form and the associated fee, prospective students must submit official transcripts from all previous postsecondary institutions, documentation of RN licensure, their resume, and a personal goal statement outlining their nursing career goals. Seton Hall also requires two letters of reference from master’s-prepared nurses: one professional (specifically, from a supervisor) and one academic. For applicants who have been out of school for a significant amount of time, two professional references may be accepted.
